West Midlands Counselling with Spirit Network Meeting BACP Spirituality - Birmingham

BACP Spirituality Network, West Midlands, meets 3 times a year. We offer a structured yet informal meeting for practitioners interested in engaging with the interface between spirituality, belief, faith, and religion, in relation to their practice. The group is practitioner led and provides a place where peers can share learning, questions, and ethical and practiced-based concerns, in a spirit of openness and enquiry.

The next meeting

Date:  13th May 2017

Time:  9.30 am - 12.30 pm

Venue:  Carrs Lane Church Centre, Carrs Lane, B4 7SX - 0121 643 6151

Participants will have an opportunity to think about what healthy verses pathological spirituality is; how to recognise the extremes, for example in abusive cults; the harm done; and look briefly at how to help those harmed by it. This session will be interacive, with discussion, group work, and space for consultation. It will draw from the content of Chapter 13 'Pathological Spirituality' co-authored by Gillie Jenkinson and Dr. Nicola Crowley, published in 'Spirituality and Psychiatry' by the Royal College of Psychiatrists, 2009.

Dr Gillie Jenkinson - Gillie is an Executive member of BACP Spirituality and has studied and worked extensively with individuals who have been involved with abusive cults. Her recent doctoral research project (2016) investigated 'what helps former cult members recover from an abusive cult experience' and her thesis is entitled: 'Freeing the Authentic Self - Phases of Recovery and Growth from an Abusive Cult Experience'.

The West Midlands Cordinating Group are: Maureen Slattery-Marsh, Juliet Fletcher, Zen Kyle, Fiona Lenton.
